They eat and drink and smoke all day and never take exercise, yet they’re slim and svelte and in perfect health. How do the French do it? We’re hoping the secret is in this book, French Feasts: 299 Traditional Recipes for Family Meals and Gatherings.
The title itself is a mouthful, so we have high expectations for this book. Chef Stephane Reynaud shares the gustatory secret of the famous French countryside cuisine: it’s full of fresh ingredients and prepared using techniques honed for hundreds of years, served graciously, and savored. This is Slow Food for sure.
Although this book is about cuisine more than culture, we’re saddened when thinking how much the French food culture focuses on the family and community… and how much ours doesn’t. That’s the real magic ingredient. This book is so beautiful though, and its recipes so doable (if you’re comfortable with a bit of kitchen improv) that we’re inspired to start our own friends-and-family tradition of a monthly French Friday. Perfect for anyone who knows their way around a kitchen.

This is probably the most beautiful and artistic cookbook I have ever encountered. I love how the recipes in this cookbook is embedded into stories of the author’s life. The pictures in the book are fitting, and the drawings are very funny. The recipes themselves are very easy to understand, and so far, all of the recipes I have tried tastes really good. This is quite a work of art. I highly recommend this to people who cook French food and would like to know more about the French culture. This is definitely worth your money.
